Rýžové terasy severně od města Ubud. Střední Bali, Indonésie.

Photogallery with English comments

This gallery is the only part of this website that I plan to translate at the moment. However, I think there is enough information to understand the photographs. The whole diary is maybe too personal to be read by people not acquainted with me.

Anyway, these photographs were taken by me on my trip to Indonesia in May/June 2009. I visited islands Bali, Java, Lombok and small islands Gili Trawangan, Meno and Air.

indonésie: Before-departure ISM with Mili, departures list and safe-packed bags. Prague Airport Ruzyne, T1.
indonésie: Traditional rest room ISM - love those big mirrors. Again I have to acknowledge local rest rooms, that they are competitively clean, I'm glad, no shame there - on the other hand the organisation of arrivals... more on this later.
indonésie: Our trople-seven is awaiting us. I'm becoming feeling uneasy imagining 17 hour flight, even with one change. I don't like long flights... damn, why do I like north-east Asia so much then?
indonésie: Food served on board Korean Air planes was tasty, except for *porridge*, rice mush with green tea.
indonésie: Yes, I'm looking ugly on this photo. It's caused partly by long flight and uneatable porridge.
indonésie: Did I mention that Korean Air stewardesses are pretty? They wear elegant dress in company colors and ribbon in hair, that reminds me freedom of flying...
indonésie: KML loads passengers more with various food, e.g. we didn't got any ice cream at all! :)
indonésie: Incheon Airport welcomed us with set of magnificent photographs, which made me long for visiting this country.
indonésie: At Incheon Airport you can get acquainted with Korean culture in so called Culture Centers. This is traditional music exhibition.
indonésie: Korea Traditional Cultural Experience Center offered introduction to traditional clothing, handicraft and games. For foreigners only.
indonésie: Korean food reminded me of Japanese food. This is decoration next to restaurant. All here is colorful, dynamical, changing... interesting.
indonésie: Incheon Airport is very large, modern, bright and airy, beautiful from inside as well as from outside.
indonésie: Another ISM, from Korean rest room. Wood-like decoration, on every door contact on responsible person, altogether with photo and cell phone.
indonésie: Family Gestouse garden is magnificent, walls of plants brings privacy. The roof in back is ours :)
indonésie: Motorbike is on Bali, as well as in whole Asia, most common mean of transport. Cheap on purchase and operation, easy to drive even on damaged roads, can pass through heavy traffic (and cause traffic jam :). Here is parking space in front od Ubud market.
indonésie: Retailing or market sell is one of possible ways to make some money in Indonesia, which is strongly affected by unemployment. Buy cheap on one market and sell with profit another - to some tourists. Mostly are traded clothes (sarongs, shirts, dresses), woodcarvings, paintings and fruit.
indonésie: Markets in Indonesia are full of fruit and generally food-stuff and clothes. This is Ubud market and scarf selection.
indonésie: Hinduists brings daily little flover, rice and incense offerings to designated places, which are in every house. Offerings are also brought to private sanctuaries (every household has its own), in front of houses and in temples.
indonésie: Umbrellas of different colors represent different manifestations of gods, one of Trinity: Brahma, Visnu, Siva.
indonésie: Stone decorations represents mythical figures or god manifestations - its complicated, but looks great.
indonésie: Dogs are to be found in great numbers throughout Bali. Although the bark on invaders they are more afraid than aggresive. Rarely treated as pets, they live hard lives taking care od themselves and they look like that: skinny, dirty and beaten.
indonésie: Daily chores includes care of sanctuaries, which are places for ceremonies as well as meditation. On enter you are expected to dress properly, including wearing sarong, cloth wearing to cover knees.
indonésie: Hinduistic background is easily distinguishable by lots of specific statues. Even though they often are simply made of concrete, with a little moss they look great.
indonésie: Orientation in towns is difficult, information tablkes like this are rarely seen.
indonésie: Ganesh is one of often seen god, well known from India.
indonésie: Streets like this are directly connected to main streets.
indonésie: Little decorative elements belonging to common house.
indonésie: Decorated sign welcomes to small hotel - at least I think so :)
indonésie: Even smaller streets are decorated and is pleasant walking them.
indonésie: Permanent care of sanctuaries occupies hotel employees.
indonésie: Not easily seen in Central Europe - coconuts towering over banana plants.
indonésie: A common view of rice paddies just out of town.
indonésie: Just a banana tree/plant.
indonésie: First encounter with exotic fauna of south-eastern Asia. Beautiful grasshopper, though I was afraid whether those colors are not warning of some poison.
indonésie: I love beautiful insects so I had to have a portrait. OK, size reference was also a reason.
indonésie: Unbelieavably beutiful, at least 4 inches long.
indonésie: Another of SE Asia beuties: 20 cm (legs-spread) spider called Giant Wood Spider, can catch in his large net even little bird or bat. Got my respect, would not like to touch it. Female spider on photo.
indonésie: Imagine yourelf walking around bushes in evening, tripping a little and ending with face in this spiders net. I am not svared of spiders, but this makes me feel uneasy.
indonésie: This little fella is one od male spiders sharing net of female. Trying avoiding getting too close, or he will be eaten.
indonésie: This ant was litlle less than half-inch long, golden color hairy. Bites.
indonésie: Bananas are smaller than south-american ones, but equally good. They grow just nex to roads.
indonésie: Dragonflyes are common around rice fields, byt are not any special.
indonésie: Chickens are running everywhere around, on streets, roads, fields. Have no idea how ownership is decided.
indonésie: White guardian. While dogs here barks but do not bite, cocks crow and attacks, too.
indonésie: Local women are often seen with big loads on their heads. Even while working they often wear fancy clothes.
indonésie: Nice scenery, byt also hard daily work.
indonésie: Nice hut somewhere in fields. They are often seen, in various level of deconstruction.
indonésie: Some large villa, we were advised to see. Really not common housing.
indonésie: Villa in rice fields. Notice the airconditioning.
indonésie: Unfortunatelly we didnt visit any hot tubs.
indonésie: Door decoration os common here. There will be more.
indonésie: Fields work - somewhere whole plants are taken, elsewhere only crops.
indonésie: How are they able carry stuff on their heads I dont understand. Interesting is that only womens do it this way.
indonésie: I would fly if I could :)
indonésie: Palm trees at sunset. Couldnt help myself.
indonésie: With dusk there are lamps - rarely though.
indonésie: Ubud is realtively large town, known by handicraft works. Main streets are characterized by lots of cars, motorbikes and lit up show-cases full of souvenirs.
indonésie: Litted showcases lure on woodcarvings and beautiful dresses.
indonésie: Little gekos are to be found everywhere - bathroom walls, bedroom ceiling, in restaurants. Locals call them *ci-ca*.
indonésie: Visitors have oportunity to buy bananas, which are while later brutally taken away from them. But who wouldn't do a little something for these nice little monkeys, right?
indonésie: In Ubud Monkey Forest live Crab-eating Macaques. They are great tree-climbers, photo shows bottom limbs made for grasping.
indonésie: Macaque puppy.
indonésie: Adult Long-tail Macaque.
indonésie: Youngling left safe place of mommy's belly and is looking around.
indonésie: This puppy was brought on fence by its mother, who while eating watched closely if nearby humans are in safe distance.
indonésie: Youngling was not agraid to walk the fence. Even in this early age it has perfect balance.
indonésie: Young apes are courious, but they dont leave mother or its group.
indonésie: Apes in Monkey Forest are not caged, its more like an safari experience - they are free to go wherever they want.
indonésie: Mother is allways near to provide help, if necessary.
indonésie: Chrames decoration is often not historic, its constantly repaired and renewed.
indonésie: There is no closing for these little repaires, everything is done on the go. Understandable in touristic exposed areas.
indonésie: For keeping historic feel and style simple traditional tools are used.
indonésie: Statues are creativelly done. This one was meant to have floating water from the jar?
indonésie: Decorations are made of plain concrete, on the other hand one must appreciate high level of detail.
indonésie: Rangda, the daemon queen, according to traditional Balinese mythology leads army of witches against Barong, the leader of the forces o good.
indonésie: Shrine wall decorations.
indonésie: Shrine wall decorations.
indonésie: Shrine wall decorations.
indonésie: Not only for meditation there are covered places in shiren area with free view around.
indonésie: Gates leading to inner sanctuary use to be very much decorated.
indonésie: Another of shrine wall decorations.
indonésie: Hand making some shrine decorations.
indonésie: One is not easily bored by these docorations. More so, when they are covered with moss, which make them look older.
indonésie: Fascinating woodcarving on doors represents some mytical figures.
indonésie: Japanese folks in *sarongs* - what a sight (dont take me wrong, i like it).
indonésie: This particular worker didnt seem to be excited by me taking portraits there.
indonésie: Not all dieties (resp. their manifestations) are good.
indonésie: Interesting woman-squirrel combination - looks great, with moss-covered lines around.
indonésie: Fascination with falic symbols is obvious. Reason of this obsession remains unknown to me.
indonésie: Something like this would be nice to have in garden :)
indonésie: Macaques have very liveful look, so comunicatice, so human-like.
indonésie: Theirs hooting was quite loud.
indonésie: Macaques were held in easily accessed areas by lots of food.
indonésie: Even while macaques are sovial animals, with piece of food they seek solitude in trees.
indonésie: Mamas milk is the best!
indonésie: Still junior has to taste enything he founds.
indonésie: Expressions of these macaques were so great, that we stayed watching them for an hour.
indonésie: Some statue motives are frequent, some are unique. What did this one represent, I dont know.
indonésie: Rangda, my favourite.
indonésie: Not all dieties are on side of good. This witch kidnaps children and rip off their heads.
indonésie: Young apes were often sunbathing and rubbing each other.
indonésie: At Monkey Forest entrance we were advised to read visitor guidelines. We did so and laughed. It was later when we understood that those guidelines were meant seriously. This little photostory shows how Mili was trying to feed monkeys with biscuits.
indonésie: One of the apes jumped on my backpack and tried to steal my water flask. It took me a while to make it go away.
indonésie: High and wide-branched trees with creepers in rugged terrain made park look like jungle.
indonésie: Im walking in forsaken part of park and what did I found: a pair of 12 feet long dragon lizards :) Concrete, fortunately.
indonésie: It was my first time seeing wood creepers. Fascinating.
indonésie: My travel-mate Mili with new friend.
indonésie: Often apes were just sitting and watching tourists walking by.
indonésie: Another variation on known subject...
indonésie: One macaque is relaxing, while other checks his fur fot parasites.
indonésie: This statue reminded me of Tolkiens Nazghuls.
indonésie: There were not only pathways on flat ground between shrines and cemetary, but also ravines with creeks and waterfalls.
indonésie: We were looking for rice paddies north of Ubud. Just next to main street road was going down the steep hill.
indonésie: At the bottom of walley was jungle, made of banana trees, cacao trees and other various plants.
indonésie: Signs of civilization: street lights :)
indonésie: This is example of reason, why I didnt find Indonesia so atractive and photogenic: architecture is mainly green or black, hard to shoot while everything is green or in case of black there is allways so high contrast between object and its surroundings...
indonésie: Offerings are rich in color, banana-leaf baskets are filled with blossoms, accompanied by small money.
indonésie: Info sign was not so helpful this time :)
indonésie: Next to every field there is a shine, where one can ask gods for good harvest.
indonésie: And finally after hour of walk a walley filled with rice paddies showed itself.
indonésie: Rice paddies are accompanied by high coconut trees.
indonésie: Bananas were usually still green. These non-ripen bananas tastes a bit like non-ripen cucumber.
indonésie: Narrow and steep valleys brings small and narrow paddies.
indonésie: Besifes rice there was sometimes vegetable garden to be faund.
indonésie: There are rarely any footpaths through paddies, it is necessary to walk carefuly on barrages.
indonésie: Houses with view on valley must be very romatnic.
indonésie: Rice paddies;
indonésie: Rice paddies;
indonésie: Watch the height of the paddies. Imagine harvesting rice, meaning walking all day up and down with rice sheafs...
indonésie: Rice paddies;
indonésie: Rice paddies;
indonésie: Rice paddies;
indonésie: That thing that is hard to recognize represents a shrine of some kind, i think.
indonésie: Shooting in paddies.
indonésie: This guy was great - at first he didnt understand what are we doing in his valley, but he talked to aus (in good english!) and later on he let me try to trash the rice.
indonésie: This way I did trash the rice :)
indonésie: This women who was packing the rice was not interested in portraiting.
indonésie: Nice grden-house siting on top of valley with magnificent view - prefect.
indonésie: Cocoa plant berry.
indonésie: Interesting white blossoms of this plant were nice to see.
indonésie: Rice plants ready for harvest.
indonésie: Somehow different *straw man*.
indonésie: Morning grocery delivery.
indonésie: Streets near market are packed with grocery sellers. Banana leaves come handy instead plastic bags.
indonésie: Market is used mostly for trading vegetable and fruit, but fishes and chicken are also common.
indonésie: Some sellers were friendly and didnt care about being photographed, some didnt like it.
indonésie: Chickens are definitely not kept in cold...
indonésie: Jack Fruit and Coconuts in front.
indonésie: Market is full of colors: besides various fruit there are sold blossoms, which are used in daily temple offerings.
indonésie: Motorbikers gathering in area dedicated to clothes and wicker-work stuff.
indonésie: Just a low wall separates smell producing pile of trash.
indonésie: Fresh snakes? Water snakes, perhaps?
indonésie: indonésie: I dont get this: two women helped him to get this heavy crate on head. But afterwards, he is walking like if it weights nothing.
indonésie: Shrine decoration, short prayers and purgation is daily ritual for many people.

indonésie: Shrine decoration, short prayers and purgation is daily ritual for many people.
indonésie: Scent sticks (well, how are these really called?) with flowers brings kindness of gods.
indonésie: Finally something to eat! :)
indonésie: Big guard dog.
indonésie: Shacks like these serves as shed for cattle or place for rest and shared lunch.
indonésie: Crossing rice terraces is possible only via narrow causeways.
indonésie: These suppose to be the famous Sayan terraces? Well, I*ve seen better views...
indonésie: Statue welcomes guests to one of private houses.
indonésie: Decorations.
indonésie: Where are you running, winged-godess?
indonésie: Youngsters were watching older ones playing football.
indonésie: They dont only watch football, they alo play, and they play well.
indonésie: Batman!
indonésie: Just random lady met in remote streets...
indonésie: Traditional Bali dance is characteristic by colorful dress, crampy moves and wierd stares.
indonésie: Barong Dance
indonésie: Barong Dance: Barong, daemon - a good one.
indonésie: Barong Dance
indonésie: Barong Dance: Father is not interested in daughters wishes - performance brings myth stories.
indonésie: Barong Dance: Evil daemon overpowered all who dared to oppose him.
indonésie: Barong Dance: Yes, we really were there. And yes, Indonesians are usually smaller.
indonésie: Nice one.
indonésie: One of a few design buildings we saw.
indonésie: Do you know those laundry places from US movies? They have them here also - just a bit different :)
indonésie: Relaxing time at porch with breakfest.
indonésie: These 4-inch, sandy smiling geckos are called *cica* by locals. Compared to big ones these are shy and do not bite.
indonésie: These little geckos were everywhere, this little one was hiding himself in highest-god*s seat.
indonésie: Rangda watching over shrine on our hostel*s premises.
indonésie: Small shrine on premises.
indonésie: Garden decorations.
indonésie: Properly dressed we are ready to watch cremation.
indonésie: People are gathering in front of deceased*s house.
indonésie: People are not mourning, just the opposite, everyone is talking and smiling, some maybe are bit bored due to long waiting.
indonésie: Yellow colors to honor gods.
indonésie: Special towered bier is ready to hold body of deased.
indonésie: Another bier carriers big cow, which will hold dead body for cremation.
indonésie: Youngsters are enjoying these festivities.
indonésie: Cow is finally fully decorated and young boys are looking forward for being carriered with it.
indonésie: Little boy tied to cow with white ribbon. If it*s for safety or it has another meaning I don*t know.
indonésie: White color goes along with whole ritual.
indonésie: Finally is deceased one brought out of house, concealed in white paper box.
indonésie: Box is with help of many placed at top of tower.
indonésie: Box is with help of many placed at top of tower.

indonésie: Several musicians were also present.
indonésie: Locals attending funeral.
indonésie: Locals attending funeral.

indonésie: Along the strret there was lots of local people, adults as well as children.
indonésie: Along the strret there was lots of local people, adults as well as children.
indonésie: Along the strret there was lots of local people, adults as well as children.
indonésie: As preparations for cremation started, people waited all around.
indonésie: Some were talking, playing with children...
indonésie: ...some were silent with thoughts of their own.
indonésie: Many brought offerings, which will be put to fire with the body.
indonésie: One funny moment: while walking through bushes around looking dor best shooting spot, Mili suddenly screams in surprise. Before I*m able ro recognize what was that thing moving over her feet, some local guy already catches it. It is larege, nice and green lizard or womething. Dinner appetizer, someone said.
indonésie: Lots of video cameras, cameras and cells were used to catch a few moments of cremation.
indonésie: Cow was fixed on place, which was already covered with ashes. Body was moved from tower into it.
indonésie: That was time for last goodbyes. Offerings were presented to the body.
indonésie: In between was tower which housed body on way in soaked with oil and burned.
indonésie: This tower was big, solid and nicely decorated. It Was used to carry body from its home to shrine one-third mile away, where it was burned.
indonésie: When was body coered with offerings and soaked with oils, cover (cow*s back) was placed back.
indonésie: When was body coered with offerings and soaked with oils, cover (cow*s back) was placed back.
indonésie: Next the bier was cut.
indonésie: Cow then stayed only on narrow construction.
indonésie: Bottom was rounded with metal plates, which make the body stay in place of biggest heat.
indonésie: As soon as the fire was lit, all was fast.
indonésie: Cow surface burned very quickly.
indonésie: Fire was supported by flamthrower - man on right is controlling flow of gasoline (probably).
indonésie: Fire burns an is concentrated on wooden core, where body lies.
indonésie: Often I*m asked about smell. There wasn*t any - although we all know, how terribly burning flesh smells. They seem to know what they are doing.
indonésie: Body fell through cow*s belly to metal casket below, where it will be burned to ashes.

There are little souvenir shops and refresments sellers, you cen even buy fresh coconut. Exit leads through narrow street packed with souvenir sellers.
indonésie: Often there are sold woodcarved statues. Complexity of carving varies, overall quality is amazing.
indonésie: Our luxury dinner - three pound lobster! Kerti Inn, Padang Bai.
indonésie: Lobster was served griiled. It went with rice and vegetables. It took us an hour to finish it. Kerti Inn, Padang Bai.
indonésie: Lobster was huge, with antennae not fitting the table. We drinked fresh mango juice, watched sea just across street... very relaxing. First day at sea as it should be. Kerti Inn, Padang Bai.
indonésie: In the morting we could clearly see, how deos our accomodation look like. Kerti Inn resides in rebuilted cornlofts, in between two rows there are trees and birdcages.

indonésie: Going snorcheling.
indonésie: I like this shirt!
